The NSW State Government has recently released the draft Metropolitan Strategy for Sydney to 2031. This document sets out the State Government’s vision for Sydney by providing a framework for housing development and job creation over the next 20 years. The Strategy incorporates high level objectives, policies and actions to facilitate investment and growth. In planning for growth, the Strategy aims to:
• Use Sydney’s land in both infill and greenfield areas effectively and efficiently;
• Strengthen and grow Sydney’s many local and strategic centres; and
• Make Sydney easier to travel around.
The details of how and where this additional population is to be accommodated and how and where these new jobs are to be created is not currently specified but is proposed to be identified in the Subregional Development Plans which will be prepared later in the year. Importantly, the content of the Subregional Development Plans will be influenced by the introduction of the new planning system which is expected later this year. The White Paper which will detail the legislation for the new planning system is yet to be released.
